Inspiration from The Mitten

The Mitten by Jan Brett is a wonderful short picture book about a little boy Nicki who drops his white mitten in the snow. He then goes on with his day without realizing that it is missing and it becomes a home to small woodland animals. I thought of this book as our first snow began to melt revealing a couple of buried and forgotten items the kids had dropped in the white fluffy stuff during their fun.

I first heard and saw this book brought to life during a storytime theater program at our local library. The book lends itself to physical play, animal noises, and lots of giggles. It also inspired Erin and I to start Pipsqueak Players. As it turns out, we're holding our first session at the Mountainside Public Library starting on January 18th! We're looking forward to working with 5-7yr olds to bring books to life with imagination, creativity, and improved reading comprehension along the way!
