Dr. Seuss' Birthday is Just Around the Corner!

NEA's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss.

Once your child is in school, the spirit calendar will certainly be full of Dr. Seuss-inspired ideas including crazy sock and crazy hair days. Until then (or even as an after school activity for school age kids), here are some fun activities...

* One fish, two fish, red fish, blue...Jell-O! Fill cups with blue Jell-O, and then place a candied Swedish fish or two in to create the perfect Seussical snack.

* Stack slices of banana and strawberries on a skewer to create the iconic red and white striped hat famously worn by that Cat.

* Part engineering, part fun, and a whole lot of perseverance! See how high you can stack your hats using squares of white paper and red party cups.

* Read "Cat in the Hat" wearing a hat, wear pajamas for "The Sleep Book"...bring a fave Dr. Seuss book to life!

* We love having our students "write books". Here's how you can do this...

(Put the text at the bottom of a sheet of paper, leaving room at the top for your child's drawings.)

__________ I am. (You/ your child should write in their own name on the blank line.) Today I ate green eggs and ham!

I can eat them in a _________. (You/ your child should write the word "box" on the blank line and draw a picture of a box at the top of the paper.)

I can eat them with a ________. (You/ your child should write the word "fox" on the blank line and draw a picture of a fox.)

...and you can continue on using Green Eggs and Ham as your model for their book (and change it up...let them make up rhyming words!)

* Read some favorite quotes (and try not to get weepy!):

Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!

Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened.

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.
