Pipsqueak Corner

Our spotlight book this week is "Five Little Monkeys" by Eileen Christelow. This is always a fan favorite because it's fun for the kids to get into the act and monkey around with the action of the book. It also empowers kids to feel like readers (even when they're pre-emerging!) because they can predict what's going to happen and "read along". In this way it also teaches numbers, rhythm and rhymes (and consequences!).

Activities:

Act out the story (use hand gestures for the numbers, rub your head for the ouchie, "dial the phone" for calling the doctor, wag your finger for "no more monkeys jumping on the bed".

Clap out syllables- you'll be making music too!

Use 5 stuffed animals (or their 5 fingers) and have your child take one away every time the monkey falls off the bed (and you can pause to point out the "taking from" concept/ subtraction that happened).

Go on a word hunt: Find the rhyming words on each page.
